Whats in a name?

summertriangleSailors are a superstitious bunch and tales of the sea have enriched humanity for thousands of years. One of the most popular items of nautical folklore is the notion that changing the name of a boat angers the Sea Gods, cursing the boat and all who sail with her….if you are bold enough to change a yacht’s name then there is a rigours re-naming ritual that you need to go through to cleanse the yacht and pacify the mighty Neptune himself. Why am i telling you this…well, in short, as justification of not changing Vega’s name! It would not have been our first choice, but, not willing to tempt fate we are sticking with it…

What does Vega mean?

Vega is the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, the fifth brightest star in the night sky and the second brightest star in the northern hemisphere. Vega is visible in the summer sky and forms the what is known as the “summer triangle” with the stars Deneb and Altair.

Sailing, stars and all things celestial share an intimate relationship, so it’s certainly an appropriate name…but it just doesn’t give me a warm and fuzzy feeling..mind you neither did my choice of career,  but I’ve stuck with that for 20 years!
