Our first trip to the mountains was so much fun we decided to head back for a second time. This time in the central and northern regions. We left Vega in the old port of Bastia, hired a car and went to explore.
First we explored the Asco valley, which was magnificent. We decided to spend the morning doing some Via Ferrata (VF) with an outfit called terra corse.
I’d not heard of VF before and was surprised to learn it dates back to World War One when the Italian army built assisted climbing routes to help troops move about quickly and efficiently over complex mountain terrain of the Dolomites.
The legacy left today is a network of VF runs all over Europe and a growing number worldwide, helping novice climbers experience much more complex routes than they could otherwise achieve. A spin off is that it also allows kids to get to grips with really quite exposed runs in safety, to help build climbing confidence.
We took on a beginner’s route with the kids, it took about 2 hours to complete and was great fun. Milly loved it but Ben was a little apprehensive. I have come to realize that I don’t generally have a great head for heights, so I dug deep and got on with the job at hand.
The next day we headed into the central highlands and explored the area around Corte. After Corte we wound up through the mountains, up to a town called Vizzavona where we signed up to an afternoon of tree top action. Again, I was the weak link managing to complete the basic green and yellow runs. Milly, Ben and Heath went on to complete the blue and blue advanced runs.
It was a cracking day out, not only can Corsica deliver stunning scenery, it has a host of action packed activities to take part in.
