Mahon Superyacht Regatta

Yesterday we sailed 35NM from Ciutadella to Mahon in Menorca, the wind was a perfect 20-27kts on the beam and we hit our max recorded speed of 9.27knots. This yacht sails like a dream…full sail up and wind in the high 20’s and sails like she is on rails. We didn’t drop below 7 knots for 4 hours straight. Wonderful.

The day before was similar and after sailing on a starboard tack for an hour I went to turn off the autopilot so we could tack only to find I never put it on. Yep. She sailed herself in 15-18 knot breeze with full sail and was perfectly balanced. Amazing. A real credit to Bill Dixon, her designer.

When we arrived in Mahon, feeling rather proud of ourselves, we found that we were not the stars of the show as over 20 super yachts had descended on the wharf for a Wally and Maxi regatta next weekend. Some seriously impressive yachting hardware is on display. If you are into performance yachts – or just beautiful things this is as good as it gets. Price tags of these toys start at 5 million for a second hand boat and soar to the 10’s of millions. A hefty price tag, but if you have the dosh they must be a lot of fun!

  1. Sounds like things are beginning to settle down – less hard graft and more enjoyment. I think you’ll find a lot of us here quite jealous.
